The potential for using imaging technology in business applications is g r e a but in most businesses today imaging consists of facsimik communications and business gnaphic presentation. Factors besides hardware technology affect the implementation of image-based information systems; p r structural otganliation and retrieval mechanisms also contribute. This paper proposes a tawonomy as a comparison framewonk for the development of indaing technologies. It is proposed that image data represent a new f u n h e n t a l data type domain, &tinct from traditional numeric and character &ta types. The differentialion capability inherent to each of the three data types are developed in relation to their ertrinsic descriptive characteristics to describe indering methodologies. The advantages and limitations of these methodologies are investigated using this tawnomy, and directions for firture research are proposed.limiting: facilitating retried is a balancing act between specificity, for precision, and generalization, for recall 246 0073-1 129-1/92 $3.00 CP 1992 IEEE
