Decline in local ecological knowledge in the Colombian Andes may constrain silvopastoral tree diversity

Abstract: Local ecological knowledge (LEK) can play an important role in ecological restoration by guiding landholder decision‐making towards more ecologically oriented land management. Silvopastures are a promising option for restoring ecological function to degraded landscapes because they increase tree cover and diversity, moderating the impacts of cattle production on ecological processes. Some silvopastoralists possess considerable LEK that can shape silvopastoral tree communities, but little is known about the tem… Show more

“…Referral sampling is often used to identify "hard to reach" populations and can be subject to bias due to nonresponse when the research concerns illegal or socially undesirable behaviors or illnesses that carry stigma or shame [20]. The topics of concern in this study were not of a sensitive nature and referral sampling has been extensively used to recruit key informants and participants in studies of agricultural systems when no sampling frame exists [21][22][23][24]. This research was conducted under the University of Florida IRB201601294 (Understanding the Formal Agricultural Input System in Haiti) and respondents were under no obligation to provide additional contacts.…”

“…Traditional ecological knowledge can contribute to restoration success in several key ways. Local or Indigenous groups may identify restoration plant materials that are not only adapted to regional climate and soils, but are also utilized by local populations, thus improving the intrinsic value of restored lands and encouraging stewardship behaviors (Gaur and Gaur, 2004;Tarbox et al, 2020). 'Traditional technologies' may represent low-cost, culturally appropriate methods of landscape restoration.…”
