Decomposition analysis of green chemical technology inventions from 1971 to 2010 in Japan

Abstract: Abstract:Green chemistry plays an important role in achieving sustainable development. This study examines the determinant factors for technology invention related to green chemistry in Japan using patent application data and a decomposition analysis framework. Our main findings are that the number of green chemical technologies applied to production processes have increased because of the scale-up of overall research activities and increased priority. Additionally, the number of patent applications for green … Show more

“…This study attempts to derive the pure priority of inventions from patent application data by controlling for scale effects. Fujii [19] applies a decomposition framework in a patent data analysis using these two factors, priority and scale. In this study, we propose a new approach to clarifying the determinants of patent applications using three factors, the priority, scale and importance of the technological category.…”

“…He considered the share of energy-related patents granted of total patents granted as the proxy variable of R&D priority for energy technology. Fujii [18] uses this R&D priority idea to develop the framework of patent decomposition analysis.…”

“…Following Fujii [18] and Fujii and Managi [21], we used only the primary international patent classification (IPC) code to categorize the technology group to avoid the double counting of patent data in each technology group. The limitations of patent data availability should be noted.…”

“…Meanwhile, previous literature focusing on the characteristics of environmental technology patents (hereafter, environmental patents) is limited, and most studies focus on the U.S. and European countries (Fujii, 2016). In recent years, several academic studies have focused on specific environmental technologies, such as wind energy technology in Europe (Lindman and Söderholm, 2015) and green chemistry in Japan (Fujii, 2016). Fujii (2016) applied a factor decomposition analysis to identify the determinants of patent applications related to green chemistry in Japan.…”
