Decomposition of Contaminants of Emerging Concern in Advanced Oxidation Processes

Abstract: This paper compared the removal degrees of selected contaminants of emerging concern, such as H2O2, O3, UV and UV/TiO2, in water solutions during advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). The tested micropollutants belong to the following groups: pharmaceuticals, dyes, UV filters, hormones, pesticides and food additives. The highest removal rate of pharmaceutical compounds was observed during the UV/TiO2 process. The decomposition of hormones in this process exceeded 96% and the concentration of the UV filter dioxy… Show more

“…Ozonation or degradation of pollutants via hydrogen peroxide are always accompanied by the addition of toxic and expensive oxidants. Also, AOPs generate several oxidation by-products with a high toxic potential [ 28 ]. Conventional treatment methods have many problems and drawbacks.…”

“…2a). This pharmaceutical compound is relative by hardly degradable also in other oxidation processes like H 2 O 2 , O 3 or UV/TiO 2 [15]. 60 min of the UV/TiO 2 process of deionized water containing CAF in a concentration of 1mg/L allowed only for a 3% decrease in the compound concentration.…”

“…UV light can lead to the decomposition of micropollutants and the formation of several decomposition by-product [14]. Those product can raise the toxic nature of micropollutant water solutions [7]. The results obtained during the Microtox ® test (5 min of expousure) for water mixture containing all micropollutants with the concentration of 1 mg/L (of each component) are presented in Figure 4.…”

“…Diversified impact of micropollutants on several indicator organisms makes it difficult to determine safe concentrations of those chemicals that do not cause adverse changes in the entire ecosystem. Hardly biodegradable compounds often require the use of advanced methods for their decomposition, which can enhance the water toxicity [6,7].…”
