Decomposition of volatile organic compounds using corona discharge plasma technology

Abstract: This paper explores the application of corona plasma technology as a tool in treatment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The review introduces the principle of corona discharge and describes the characteristics of plasma, especially of various corona plasma reactors. By summarizing the main features of such reactors, this paper provides a brief background to different power sources and reactor configurations and their application to VOC treatment design. Considering chlorinated compounds, benzene series an… Show more

“…Coupling of non-thermal plasma with heterogeneous catalysts and photocatalysts is also being applied with success in pursuit of synergic effects [5][6][7][8]. The achievements and knowledge gained over a few decades of fundamental research and modeling studies have led to the development of large scale pilot plants which are in operation in various parts of the world and to the commercialization of smaller devices for domestic use [1,9]. Despite this rather advanced level of maturity of plasma based air purification technology there are still important aspects which need to be investigated in detail in fundamental research.…”

“…CDP is primarily a diffused technique for plasma ignition generated around sharp and pointed electrodes, having sufficient electric field for accelerating the ionization energy of randomly generated electrons to that of milieu gas molecules or atoms (Du et al., 2019). It is produced at an increased voltage that occurs primarily at one electrode.…”

“…Plasma technology shows a promising result on the environmental clean-up for dealing with contaminants, such as volatile organic compounds ( Wessenback, 2016 , Chung et al, 2018 , Du et al, 2018 , Du et al, 2019 ; Sanito et al, 2020a ), recalcitrant organic compounds and dyes ( Zhang et al, 2021 , Zhou et al, 2021a , Zhou et al, 2021c , Zhou et al, 2021b ), metals, metalloids ( Cubas et al, 2014 , Cubas et al, 2015 , Sanito et al, 2020b , Sanito et al, 2020c ), carbon from plastic waste ( Sanito et al, 2020b ) and microorganism ( Santos et al, 2018 ), and mostly studies are based on the laboratory scale which are promising to be applied in the real application. Decomposition trichloroethylene (C 2 HCl 3 ), dichloromethane (CH 2 Cl 2 ), 1,1,1-Tricholorethane (C 2 H 3 Cl 3 ), carbon tetra chloride (CCl 4 ), chloroform (CHCl 3 ), carbon tetraflouride (CF 4 ), hexafluoroethane (C 2 F 6 ), and Sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ) showed a good progress conducted by corona discharge and dielectric barrier discharge ( Du et al, 2018 ).…”
