Dedifferentiated Liposarcoma of the Retroperitoneum

Abstract: A dedifferentiated liposarcoma of the retroperitoneum is an extremely rare tumor. A 51-year old man was admitted to our department because a retroperitoneal mass was seen on abdominal computed tomography at another hospital. Computed tomography of the abdomen and magnetic resonance imaging showed a large pelvic mass located in the right hemipelvis, and it was pushing the right ureter and invading the right kidney, duodenum, colon and inferior vena cava. The patient underwent right radical nephrectomy, pylorus … Show more

“…Myxoid components of well-differentiated liposarcoma demonstrate water entiated components that is observed histologically. However, a more blended or gradual transition between these components has also been described (25,33). In some cases, the fat component predominates, which is suggestive of dedifferentiation within a well-differentiated liposarcoma.…”

“…However, resecting contiguous organs is necessary for an R0 resection in many cases and includes en bloc resection of other retroperitoneal organs, including the kidney, adrenal gland, pancreas, spleen, and even a vascular resection (inferior vena cava) if indicated [3]. One report stated that combined resection of adjacent organs is required in 75% of retroperitoneal tumors [5]. Partial or subtotal resection is generally not recommended in the case that complete resection is impossible, but partial resection can be performed for relief of symptom such as intestinal obstruction or vascular compression [3].…”

“…Radical excision is considered as the most effective treatment for liposarcoma and usually has an important impact on the survival rate of such patients 2 . It has been reported that 5‐year survival rate increased from 16.7% of incomplete excision to 58.0% of complete excision 6 .…”

“…Liposarcomas, representing 15% of the soft‐tissue sarcomas, 1 are most commonly seen in adults aged 40–50 years 2 . They are frequently seen in the limbs and trunk, and rarely in the retroperitoneal space 1 .…”
