A next-to-leading order QCD analysis of spin asymmetries and structure functions in polarized deep inelastic lepton nucleon scattering is presented within the framework of the radiative parton model. A consistent NLO formulation of the Q 2 -evolution of polarized parton distributions yields two sets of plausible NLO spin dependent parton distributions in the conventional MS factorization scheme. They respect the fundamental positivity constraints down to the low resolution scale Q 2 = µ 2 N LO = 0.34 GeV 2 . The Q 2 -dependence of the spin asymmetries A p,n,d 1 (x, Q 2 ) is similar to the leading-order (LO) one in the range 1 ≤ Q 2 ≤ 20 GeV 2 and is shown to be non-negligible for x-values relevant for the analysis of the present data and possibly forthcoming data at HERA.

We study the large order behaviour in perturbation theory of the Bjorken, Ellis-Jaffe and Gross-Llewellyn-Smith sum rules. In particular, we consider their first infrared renormalons, for which we obtain their analytic structure with logarithmic accuracy and also an approximate determination of their normalization constant. Estimates of higher order terms of the perturbative series are given. The Renormalon subtracted scheme is worked out for these observables and compared with experimental data. Overall, good agreement with experiment is found. This allows us to obtainâ 0 and some higher-twist non-perturbative constants from experiment:â 0 = 0.141 ± 0.089; f 3,RS (1 GeV) = −0.124 +0.137 −0.142 GeV 2 .

In view of recent and foreseen technical advances in beam polarization in future proton colliders we discuss possible tests of non-standard physics at LHC and SSC assuming initial proton polarization, specifically to test for a strong electroweak sector and comparing with different extended gauge models. We examine lepton pair production, studying left-right and forward-backward asymmetries, assuming quark-antiquark and WW fusion production mechnisms. We discuss the uncertainties related to polarized proton structure functions.
