Deep soft-tissue leiomyoma of the forearm mimicking a primary bone tumor of the ulna

Abstract: Leiomyomas of the soft tissues are rare in general, and extremely uncommon in the forearm. In general, leiomyomas are benign soft-tissue tumors that occur where smooth muscles are present. We present a case of soft-tissue leiomyoma of the forearm eroding the midshaft of the ulna, with emphasis on radiological diagnosis and histopathological correlation.

“…This tumour usually shows calcification in 58% of the cases [ 6 ]. Leiomyomas in the skeletal muscles have been described in 12 children so far in case reports and case series [ 1 , 2 , 6 11 ] including our case report ( Table 1 ). The only instances where such tumours were reported in the forearm of an adult is of a 25-year-old female [ 12 ].…”

“…In fact, calcification occurs in approximately one third of cases [ 1 ]. Further differential diagnoses were Ewing sarcoma [ 2 ], lipoma, leiomyosarcoma, schwannoma, neurofibroma, hemangioma, and soft-tissue giant-cell tumor of the tendon [ 9 ]. In our case, differential diagnosis included arthritis due to the initial isolated swelling of the ankle and foot.…”

“…Similar findings were described by Ramachandran et al . [ 9 ] in a case report of DSTL of the forearm. Interestingly, in our specimen, a low expression of CD34 was discovered.…”
