Deeply understanding the Zn anode behaviour and corresponding improvement strategies in different aqueous Zn-based batteries

Abstract: Owing to the high capacity of metallic Zn anode and intrinsically safe aqueous electrolyte, aqueous Zn–based batteries have advanced energy storage technology alternatives beyond the lithium–ion batteries by providing cost...

“…Currently, zinc oxide, zinc hydroxide, and sulfate hydroxide hydrate (Zn 4 SO 4 (OH) 6 ⋅ x H 2 O) have been reported separately. [ 69,71,88–90 ] It is worth noting that the type and concentration of corrosion byproducts are also affected by other parameters, such as Zn electrode position, scanning rate, and accessible water near the Zn surface. [ 46 ] Here, we will comprehensively analyze the side reaction of chemical corrosion via various characterizations of morphology, phase composition, and electrochemical properties.…”

“…Nevertheless, the application of Zn‐P can lead to other challenges, including a failure mechanism that is entirely different from the widely studied Zn foil. [ 5,6 ] First, the enlarged contact area of Zn‐P poses a higher risk of corrosion and deteriorates the intrinsic instability of Zn in an aqueous solution. [ 7–9 ] The applied aqueous‐based electrolytes in RZBs have high ion conductivity, which is several orders of magnitude larger than the organic‐based electrolytes.…”

“…The morphology and texture of Zn deposits have been proved to be closely related to additives 22,[24][25][26] , initial substrate composition and texture 5,27,28 , and applied external elds 19,29 . Organic molecules and additives can adsorb on a Zn surface, guiding the Zn deposits to show speci c preferred orientation of crystal planes 25,26,30 . For example, the polyethylene-glycolin electrolytes 25 make the Zn deposits show a preferred orientation exposure of (002) and (103) planes, which mitigates dendrite formation and reduces the later corrosion rates.…”
