This research proposes a relationship between two methods such as a numerical approach by conducting a microtremor array observation and field survey by using the seismic cone penetration test unit (SCPTu). A database of shear-wave velocity (Vs) measurements was established using the microtremor array technique and seismic cone penetration test unit (SCPTu) on high-quality samples of rock and soft soil in Padang city, Indonesia. The study also demonstrates that the Vs values obtained from the different methods are consistent with the microtremor array technique. This technique may thus be deemed a valuable tool, as it can be used in engineering practice with confidence. Comparison of the Vs for different soils at the first layer between the microtremor array observation results and the SCPTu results exhibited the microtremor array method is unable to determine the Vs at the layer where its Vs changes dramatically, such as at the same layer as station UNP at 2 to 3.5m deep.

West Sumatra is a province in Indonesia that is known for its high levels of seismic activity. Brick-walled buildings are particularly vulnerable during earthquakes. As the property sector continues to grow, the demand for red bricks in construction is rising. The brick industry in West Sumatra is thriving despite economic pressures. Red brick remains popular among the public, particularly as the main component of walls in simple house buildings. However, each manufacturer uses different raw materials, resulting in varying levels of quality, which still need to meet the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). This research aims to determine which brick composition has the best elemental properties in West Sumatra and investigates the effect of temperature on the chosen brick and its characteristics. The X-ray fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF) test results indicate that the composition of Pariaman bricks is the closest to the required standards and so they were selected as test specimens to evaluate brick characteristics. The highest compressive strength results were obtained in bricks at a temperature of 800 o C and they also fulfilled the requirements of SNI 15-2094-2000, with a water absorption capacity under 20% of the water absorption rates. Based on the density testing, the increase in the firing temperatures of the specimens increases the bulk density. This is related to the lower porosity of brick at higher temperature firings. The modulus of elasticity was directly proportional to the compressive strength; the higher the temperature, the higher the brick stiffness.

A Hybrid Artificial Neural Network—Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm Model for the Determination of Target Displacements in Mid-Rise Regular Reinforced-Concrete Buildings

The realistic determination of damage estimation and building performance depends on target displacements in performance-based earthquake engineering. In this study, target displacements were obtained by performing pushover analysis for a sample reinforced-concrete building model, taking into account 60 different peak ground accelerations for each of the five different stories. Three different target displacements were obtained for damage estimation, such as damage limitation (DL), significant damage (SD), and near collapse (NC), obtained for each peak ground acceleration for five different numbers of stories, respectively. It aims to develop an artificial neural network (ANN)-based sustainable model to predict target displacements under different seismic risks for mid-rise regular reinforced-concrete buildings, which make up a large part of the existing building stock, using all the data obtained. For this purpose, a hybrid structure was established with the particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO), and the network structure’s hyper parameters were optimized. Three different hybrid models were created in order to predict the target displacements most successfully. It was found that the ANN established with particles with the best position revealed by the hybrid models produced successful results in the calculation of the performance score. The created hybrid models produced 99% successful results in DL estimation, 99% in SD estimation, and 99% in NC estimation in determining target displacements in mid-rise regular reinforced-concrete buildings. The hybrid model also revealed which parameters should be used in ANN for estimating target displacements under different seismic risks.
