Defective Collagen Metabolism in Saudi Patients with Hernia

Abstract: Fibroblastic cell cultures were derived from the hernial sac and some of the surrounding muscles (rectus sheath, internal oblique, and/or cremasteric muscle) of 130 Saudi patients with different types of herniation, and from 21 control subjects. The rates of cell proliferation were studied for 39 days. Results suggested decreased rates of proliferation of cells derived from patients compared to controls. In vitro studies of the rates of incorporation of 14C proline into the muscle biopsies revealed decreased r… Show more

“…All studies recognize the role of the collagen in attributing structural resistance and integrity to the aponeurosis and fascias (2) . In this condition the presence in adequate amount as well as the collagen properties are essential for the functionality of fascia transversalis.…”

“…Research aimed at evaluating the role played by biologic factors has centered on possible alterations in connective tissue metabolism. This idea is also supported by the fact that diseases such as Marfan and Ehlers-Danlos syndromes, cutis laxa, osteogenesis imperfecta, 3 and congenital hip dislocation 4 have been associated with hernial processes.Tissue specimens from patients with hernias for this type of experimental study include the abdominal anterior rectus muscle sheath, 5 cremaster, hernial sac, 6 and even skin tis- …”

“…Patients with inguinal hernia have been shown to have a defective collagen synthesis mechanism coupled with changes in the ratios of the types of collagen. This renders the abdominal sinews weaker, making them more prone to hernias (Ajabnoor et al 1992, Rosch et al 2002, Tharappel 2014, Wagh & Read 1972.…”
