Defense and counter-defense in rice–virus interactions

Abstract: Rice viruses, known as "rice killer", are vector-borne pathogens that cause severe disease and significant yield loss in rice production around the world. Rice virus disease is characterized by uncontrolled virus replication and the activation of host responses that contribute to pathogenesis. Underlying these phenomena is the potent suppression of rice antiviral responses, particularly the RNA silencing pathway and plant hormone pathways, which play vital roles in antiviral immunity. Classical rice virus dise… Show more

“…It can be speculated that p25 might exert a similar effect on BvIAA2 and BvIAA6 as the Rice dwarf virus (RDV) P2 protein on OsIAA10. RDV P2 manipulates the auxin signaling by targeting OsIAA10 in the nucleus and preventing its degradation by 26S proteasome ( Jin et al, 2016 ; Qin et al, 2019 ). Contrary, the TMV replicase interacts with AtIAA26 and disrupts its nucleolar localization which affects the function of AtIAA26 as transcriptional repressor of auxin responsive genes ( Padmanabhan et al, 2005 , 2006 , 2008 ).…”

“…Phytohormones are the main chemical messengers in the regulation of the physiological processes from germination to senescence during the whole life cycle of plants. Phytohormones have significant roles in defending against biotic and abiotic stresses in plants, especially against viral infections [ 49 , 68 ]. RBSDV and RSV are two important and devastating rice pathogens.…”

“…Seventeen rice viruses have been reported, including rice black-streaked dwarf virus (RBSDV), rice bunchy stunt virus (RBSV), rice dwarf virus (RDV), rice gall dwarf virus (RGDV), rice giallume virus (RGV), RGSV, rice hoja blanca virus (RHBV), rice necrosis mosaic virus (RNMV), RRSV, rice stripe necrosis virus (RSNV), rice stripe virus (RSV), rice transitory yellowing virus (RTYV) also named as rice yellow stunt virus (RYSV), rice tungro bacilliform virus (RTBV), rice tungro spherical virus (RTSV), RYMV, southern rice black-streaked dwarf virus (SRBSDV), and rice stripe mosaic virus (RSMV) ( Hibino, 1996 ; Qin et al., 2019 ). Since most of the above viruses are arthropod-borne, damages may become more severe as the population of vector insects increases.…”
