DeFi: Decentralized Finance - An Introduction and Overview

Abstract: DeFi, short for decentralized finance, is a new paradigm that enjoys increasing popularity in the financial world. DeFi posits that financial services should not rely on centralized intermediaries but should be provided by users for users. This is done by deploying software components to a decentralized peer-to-peer system which is grounded on blockchain technology. This introductory text discusses the origins of DeFi and delineates DeFi characteristics from those of traditional finance. Several examples of De… Show more

“…Regulatory ambiguity plagues the DeFi ecosystem. DeFi platforms are borderless and decentralized, presenting significant global regulatory issues for policymakers and regulators (Schueffel, 2021). Decentralized financial operations are hampered by a lack of defined standards and regulatory frameworks, which deters institutional investors and traditional financial institutions from adopting DeFi (Ozili, 2023).…”

“…The total value of the assets locked in DeFi applications (TVL) increased from $675 million at the beginning of 2020 to more than $40 billion by the end of the first quarter of the following year due to a sharp rise in their popularity. Patrick Schueffel, 2021 [5] explained that decentralized finance, or "DeFi," is completely dominating the Fintech industry. True open innovation encourages a dispersed innovation process that permits managed information transfer across organizational boundaries (Chesbrough, Vanhaverbeke, &West, 2014).…”
