Deficiency of vitamin B12 and its relation with neurological disorders: a critical review

Abstract: B 12 is an essential vitamin for human body which reduces the chances of neurological diseases, birth defects, and chronic disorders. It is a vital micro-nutrient for maintaining the brain health. This review sorts out some causes of vitamin B 12 (B 12) deficiency and develops its link with neurological disorders. The portals include PubMed, Google Scholar, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Pak MediNet, and Science Direct were search for literature retrieval. Study of literature revealed that deficienc… Show more

“…Even though coexisting comparable disease severity has been seen, mostly either hematological or neurological complaints prevail. The nervous system can be involved at multiple levels, causing subacute degenerative disorder, peripheral neuropathies, and neuropsychiatric symptoms [ 28 ]. Among the cranial nerves, olfactory and optic nerves are most commonly involved [ 29 ].…”

“…There is then vitamin B6 and when intensities of this vital B vitamin are excessively little, at that time there might be observed scaly, oleaginous eruptions on face or upper body. However, these are not the lone signs of B vitamin deficit, but there is a further wide-ranging list of vitamin B scarcity signs [47,48].…”

“…The preclinical stage of deficiency, named sub-clinical deficiency, exhibits only non-specific symptoms [12] and often remains underdiagnosed with negative health impact in vulnerable groups, especially older adults [13]. The most frequent and evident clinical manifestations of B12 deficiency are megaloblastic anemia and neurological alterations (e.g., sensory and motor disturbances, particularly in the lower extremities, ataxia) [14]. Moreover, neurological disorders can occur in the absence of hematological manifestations [2].…”
