Integrating user‐centered approaches into development processes is one of the main challenges nowadays that derives from different objectives of software engineering (SE) and human‐computer interaction (HCI) fields. For SE experts, the main goal is quality code creation, whereas for HCI professionals, it is the continuous product interaction with the users. The major question is what tools and timings can be used together to achieve these goals effectively. Therefore, this article provides comparative, exploratory, and qualitative research about possible solutions on how practitioners transfer HCI values and practices to SE processes. The current practice of software companies was studied by conducting interviews on a sample of 13 Hungarian Information Technology companies to explore the SE processes in respect of several dimensions (applied development models, the integrity of user‐centered methods, and the user experience [UX] maturity). According to preliminary expectations, the development processes of the various companies proceed in different steps; nevertheless, they can be well grouped together based on the UX methods applied. The results representing the various user‐centered processes can be considered useful for future decision makers of software companies worldwide.

“…Therefore, judging by (i) the overall course learning outcomes' attainment (85% of students earned > B+), (ii) the overall success of using the various web-based tools, namely the LMS, Turnitin, the Blog, the recording and posting of videos albeit minor dissatisfaction about connection issues, and contrary to the apprehensions highlighted by Vaddale et al for the use of somehow new Virtual Reality (VR) technology (Vaddale et al, 2021) in Public Speaking, the use of web-based technology in a blended way for Public Speaking did not seem to bring about any apparent students' technology-related anxiety. This can be explained by the fact that web-based and video technologies are becoming readily used by learners very early in their high school itineraries even before joining University, and that with the advancement of User Experience Design (UXD or UED) (Christensen et al, 2020) in web-based applications that are very much user-centered and which make interaction with web applications intuitive, the Perceived Ease of Use (Davis, 1989) is no longer a determining factor for web-based technology acceptance. Although no attempt was made to measure the Perceived Usefulness (PU) at any time of the course, we believe judging by the level of engagement of the students that whatever it was at the onset of the class, it quickly was apparent that PU was very high.…”

Public Speaking and Online Peer Feedback in a Blended Learning EFL Course Environment: Students’ Perceptions

This paper reports on a blended learning approach for public speaking in an English as a foreign language (EFL) context. The researcher implemented the course design through reduced weekly face-to-face class sessions and online student interaction using a speech video-based blog. Using a survey conducted at the end of the semester, multiple comments provided for online peer feedback, structured outlines submitted to Turnitin, and instructor’s weekly observation of the students’ presence and performance online, the researcher collected data about the students’ progressive learning of the public speaking skills, peer feedback, and the students’ assessment of each aspect pertaining to the blended learning experience. The qualitative analysis revealed the effectiveness of online peer feedback in public speaking skills development as demonstrated by students’ attainment of course intended learning outcomes, as well as an overall positive student perception towards the blended learning model, with minor reservation of less confident students at the onset of the online implementation phase.

Establishing a blockchain online travel agency with a human–computer interaction perspective

Purpose This study aims to incorporate innovative technology (i.e. blockchain) into the design of an online travel agency (B-OTA). The authors accelerated the design of the prototype system through expert interviews to understand the convenience of the blockchain travel and accommodation platform for users. The authors further validated the prototype system design and improved reference capability through usability testing. Design/methodology/approach Rapid prototyping of B-OTA was carried out through the Delphi method and literature compilation. Design validation of usability testing was conducted using modified systematic evaluation methodology. Prototype system suggestions and improvements were collected through feedback from test subjects. Findings This study will be helpful for the development of B-OTAs and related technologies. Through usability testing, the authors verified that creating a familiar operating environment for users can reduce users’ fear of unfamiliar technology. The results of this research provide future B-OTA researchers and practitioners with design guidelines. Originality/value Beyond the blockchain-related technologies used, few studies have reported experiences and interface design of B-OTAs. This study states that, as many human–computer interaction-related papers have pointed out, the basic prerequisite for successful interface design is a clearer definition of users’ needs during operation. User experience and user interface design should provide a good user experience.
