Defining Determinism

Abstract: The article puts forward a branching-style framework for the analysis of determinism and indeterminism of scientific theories, starting from the core idea that an indeterministic system is one whose present allows for more than one alternative possible future. We describe how a definition of determinism stated in terms of branching models supplements and improves current treatments of determinism of theories of physics. In these treatments, we identify three main approaches: one based on the study of (differen… Show more

“…A similar idea in the context of the theory of branching spacetimes has been developed by[27][28][29][30]: the models of the branching spacetime axioms are non-Hausdorff, but histories (i.e., constructs representing single spacetimes) are Hausdorff 13. Therefore, we obtain here indeterminism in two senses: global for whole spacetimes and local for geodesics; for more on this distinction, see[31,32].…”

“…(Butterfield 2005). This definition can be amended in cases where gauge freedom complicates the notion of state (Müller and Placek 2018). 11 In dissipative systems, multiple states might all end on the same attractor and so are unique only up until then.…”

“…3 See, e.g., Butterfield (2005) and Earman (2006). See Müller (2015) and Müller and Placek (2018) for discussion. 4 If a state is not specified via intrinsic properties, a verdict of determinism can be spurious.…”
