Defining endometrial growth during the menstrual cycle with three‐dimensional ultrasound

Abstract: This study has defined the relative and absolute changes in endometrial growth, both in terms of thickness and volume, throughout the normal menstrual cycle. These data provide a reference for future three-dimensional studies investigating menstrual disorders, pathophysiological change and subfertility.

“…Even in empirical articles that report little luteal variation in ET, a clear, though qualitative, change in ET can be observed (Figure 2, Table 6). Research measuring ET serially is infrequent, but we have found articles that document ET via transvaginal ultrasound in Canadian (Baerwald and Pierson, 2004), Scottish (Randall et al, 1989), English (Raine-Fenning et al, 2004), and Swedish populations (Bakos et al, 1994). There are a few confounding problems with the serial measurements from the literature when it comes to assessing luteal endometrial function.…”

“…[9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17] Other applications of 3-dimensional sonography of the endometrium include endometrial volume measurements in patients with postmenopausal bleeding, assessment of intracavitary lesions, evaluation of endometrial receptivity during in vitro fertilization, localization of the maximal implantation point during sonographically guided embryo transfer, and use in association with extrauterine gestations. [18][19][20][21][22][23] Recently, 3-dimensional transvaginal sonography of the endometrium has assisted the diagnosis of interstitial and intramural pregnancies.…”
