Definition of hypertension‐associated oral pathogens in NHANES

Abstract: Background Increasing evidence links periodontal microbiota to several systemic conditions, including high blood pressure (BP). Antibodies to oral pathogens can be considered an indirect assessment of periodontal bacterial burden. We aimed at assessing the relationship between systemic exposure to periodontal microbiota, expressed in terms of relative antibodies, and BP, using data from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III). Methods We analyzed cross‐sectional, nationally repr… Show more

“…A machine learning (ML) approach based on gradient boosting model (GBM) was then used to identify which covariate between PISA and BoP was the most efficient in training the algorithm for the identification of BP status. Specifically, GBM is a decision‐tree ensemble method that can provide estimates of variable importance from a trained predictive model, based on how each covariate improves the model performance (Pietropaoli, Del Pinto, Ferri, Ortu, & Monaco, ). Covariates can then be ranked and compared with each other.…”

“…Periodontitis has effects on the endothelial function, causing endothelial dysfunction, stiffness of the arteries and high BP [ 98 ], and hypertension-associated oral pathogens (HOP) as C. rectus , V. parvula , P. melaninogenica have been identified [ 99 ]. Late colonizers as P. gingivalis , A. actinomycetemconcomitan , T. forsythia, and T. denticola have been explored in vascular atherosclerosis lesions but their possible association with blood pressure has not been evaluated [ 100 , 101 ].…”

“…In fact, it aggravates the disease burden by worsening the cardiac involvement and by increasing the risk of end stage renal disease (ESRD) and stroke [2]. Further, since many mechanisms can intervene in the determination of BP levels [45], hypertension might be difficult to control in Fabry disease due to the underlying proinflammatory environment, similar to what is widely observed in the presence of low-grade systemic inflammation of other sources [46][47][48][49][50].…”
