Definitions, characteristics and measures of IT project complexity - a systematic literature review

Abstract: As the world of Information Technology (IT) engineering becomes more complex every day, the formal study of project complexity becomes more and more important for managing projects effectively, to avoid poor performance and failure. Complexity is not yet clearly understood nor sufficiently defined and the terminology itself is being overloaded and over-used. This paper is a systematic literature review that attempts to identify and classify proposed definitions and measures of IT project complexity. The result… Show more

“…When adopting social media for managing projects, organizations need to consider the factors affecting the complexity and success of its adoption. Megaprojects are generally exposed to underperformance [9], hence do not resemble the best setting for social media adoption, as no specific framework or methodology is recorded in the literature for managing complex IT projects [10]. For the strategic integration and use of social media in project management, the associated benefits and risks need to be explored.…”

“…Risks in software projects may present a threat to project success [39]. It's essential to identify the risk and assess the probability of occurring and its possible impact on the project [26]. Risk management applied to software projects may improve your results [28].…”

“…◄ 46 ► In this context, this research is focused on finding productivity measures related to SHF that influence software development productivity [20], [25]. Of course, it should be taken into account that human factors or soft skills have a strong impact on the development team's productivity [21], IT project teams [8], and IT project complexity [26]. With this, we seek to contribute to the software engineering and software project management fields by proposing initiatives closely related to the working team [15].…”
