Deflection-Based Aircraft Structural Loads Estimation With Comparison To Flight

Abstract: Traditional techniques in structural load measurement entail the correlation of a known load with strain-gage output from the individual components of a structure or machine. The use of strain gages has proved successful and is considered the standard approach for load measurement. However, remotely measuring aerodynamic loads using deflection measurement systems to determine aeroelastic deformation as a substitute to strain gages may yield lower testing costs while improving aircraft performance through reduc… Show more

“…So TA performance represents the primary challenge in modeling uncertainty. Four distinctive approaches to treat the aircraft flexibilities and vibrations in TA are: determining the in-flight flexible aircraft wing motion using various measurement techniques [37], and processing the flexibilities and vibrations sensed by the inertial sensors as system noise in the filer equations [38]. The first three approaches above need extra hardware or software expenditures, the last one needs only software expenditures.…”

“…Current aircraft maintenance and repair systems used for structural monitoring rely on load monitoring systems while using strain gauges [1,2], optical measurement systems [3][4][5][6][7], and fiber brag grating (FBG) [8][9][10][11] sensors.…”

“…Afterwards, many research on wing deflection measurement and analysis were motivated by the catastrophic failure of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) Helios [5,6]. Lizotte et al [7] proposed estimation of aircraft structural loads based on wing deflection measurements. Their approach is based on the installation of infrared lightemitting diodes (LEDs) on the wings; however, the deflection measurements are local, which do not cover the whole wing structure unless a large number of LEDs are installed.…”

“…However, it has limitation to the aircraft material and needs many wires which will increase the load of the aircraft. Besides, the strain sensor is easily affected by the physical abrasion, temperature, and so forth [12][13][14]. As for optical measurement, the Dutch National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR) used a camera to record the black and white striped pattern on the wing surface to estimate the flexible deformation [15].…”
