Deformation and metamorphism in the Fenes Nappe (southern Apuseni Mountains, Romania)

Abstract

The Fenes Nappe belongs to the stack of tectonic units cropping out in the southern Apuseni Mts (Romania). It is characterised by a structural history consisting of two folding phases that developed during the time spanning from Early Aptian to Late Maastrichtian. The D1 phase produced west-northwest-verging, isoclinal to very tight folds, associated to a slaty cleavage. The main metamorphic imprint of the Fenes Nappe is linked to this deformation phase; illite and chlorite 'crystallinity' values indicate metamorphic conditions of the late diagenesis, close to the diagenetic zone/anchizone boundary. The subsequent D2 phase produced north-northwest-verging, parallel folds, not associated with synkinematic recrystallisation. These phases are interpreted as developed during a structural path, which includes burial at a depth of 8-10 km, followed by exhumation at shallower structural levels. To cite this article: A. Son histoire tectonique est caractérisée par deux phases de plissement, qui se sont développées du début de l'Aptien jusqu'à la fin du Maastrichtien. La phase D1 a produit des plis, fermés à isoclinaux, avec vergence vers ouest-nord-ouest, associés à une foliation de plan axial (slaty cleavage). La principale empreinte métamorphique de l'unité de Fenes est liée à cette phase de déformation D1; les valeurs de cristallinité de l'illite et de la chlorite indiquent des conditions métamorphiques allant de la diagenèse supérieure au passage diagenèse/anchizone. La phase D2, qui a suivi, a produit des plis parallèles, avec vergence vers le nord-nord-ouest, auxquels n'est associée aucune recristallisation syn-métamorphique. Ces phases se seraient développées durant une structuraction comprenant un enfouissement jusqu'à 8-10 km de profondeur, suivi de l'exhumation à des niveaux structuraux plus superficiels.
