Deformation Monitoring in Historic Buildings: A Case Study

Abstract: Deformation monitoring in heritage buildings is an essential task for conservation and restoration studies. A vast variety of techniques can be applied assuming that a three-dimensional modelization is required: GPS (Global Positioning System) measurement, photogrammetry, laser scanning, SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) interferometry, terrestrial surveying. They are reviewed for their possible application to a specific heritage building where deformation monitoring has to be performed under severe conditions re… Show more

“…To calculate displacements, C2C distance computation method was used. This method was developed based on the Hausdorff distance [44], which can be defined as a maximum distance of a set to the nearest point in the other set [45]: ℎ1 3 , 3 6 = 9:; < =:> { ( ; , > )}D (2) where: aA -points of set Ap; bB -points of set Bp; d (aA, bB) -Euclidean distance between aA and bB; Fig. 6 shows the basic concept of C2C distance computation method: (a) there are two point cloud data sets (A) = (a1; a2; a3) and (B) = (b1; b2); The algorythm first searches for minimum distance value from each point in (A) to every point in (B); (b) minimum distance from a1 to every point of (B) is a1b1; (c) minimum distance from a2 to every point of (B) is a2b2;…”

“…After comparing two different scans, the previous results were verified that there were not any displacements. In [2], a group of Gothic buildings in Valencia that have a historical value were monitoring by levelling. As a result, significant displacements were observed in places where structural weaknesses were most expected.…”

“…Currently, TLS play a very important role in a wide range of purposes that can be directly extrapolated to cultural heritage [37], including the follow-up of an intervention [38], defect detection [39], or the reproduction of existing models [40,41]. However, the high cost of these technologies, the need for specialized management and the pre-processing of the information acquired can be considered as challenges and/or disadvantages.…”

“…Microdeformation monitoring, as a dynamic and realtime testing technology, can be an extremely important means for engineering disaster prevention and control [18][19][20][21][22]. Especially, in the field of deformation monitoring, Chai et al proposed a deformation monitoring method based on the fiber Bragg grating technique and established the strain transfer relationship between fiber Bragg grating and shaft lining [23][24][25][26].…”
