The shock wave generated from a high explosive detonation can cause significant damage to any objects that it encounters, particularly those objects located close to the source of the explosion. Understanding blast wave development and accurately quantifying its effect on structural systems remains a considerable challenge to the scientific community. This paper presents a comprehensive experimental study into the loading acting on, and subsequent deformation of, targets subjected to nearfield explosive detonations. Two experimental test series were conducted at the University of Sheffield (UoS), UK, and the University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa, where blast load distributions using Hopkinson pressure bars and dynamic target deflections using digital image correlation were measured respectively. It is shown through conservation of momentum and Hopkinson-Cranz scaling that initial plate velocity profiles are directly proportional to the imparted impulse distribution, and that spatial variations in loading as a result of surface instabilities in the expanding detonation product cloud are significant enough to influence the transient displacement profile of a blast loaded plate.

This paper presents experimental data and numerical analysis of the effects of detonating explosive charges ranging from 1000 to 26288 kg laid out on the ground. The charges consist of different ordnances widespread in a carpet-like form. Numerical analysis using ANSYS/Autodyn are carried out with a view to gain a better understanding of the blast loading resulting from the detonation of large masses of ordnance. Good correlation between the numerical results and experiments in terms of crater dimensions and blast wave parameters is obtained. The influence of the charge configurations on the blast wave parameters and crater shape are also investigated. While the cube root scaled distance works well for the evaluation of pressure and impulse values produced by a relatively compact charge layout, the scaled distance parameter has to be modified for cases where charges are spread in a carpet-like fashion.

The measurement of dynamic deformation of an explosively loaded plate is an extremely onerous task. Existing techniques such as digital image correlation are expensive and the equipment may be damaged by explosively driven debris/ejecta, particularly if it is necessary to locate such equipment close to loaded elements which are likely to fail. A new, inexpensive and robust measurement technique for use in full-scale blast testing is presented, which involves the placement of displacement timer pins (DTPs) at pre-defined distances from the rear surface of the centre of a plate. A strain gauge on the perimeter of each pin records the time at which the plate comes into contact with the end of each DTP and hence has deformed to that value of displacement, giving a direct measure of the time-varying deformation at a discrete point on the plate. An experimental proof-of-concept was conducted and the results are compared with numerical displacements determined using LS-DYNA. The numerical and experimental results were in very good agreement, which suggests that the proposed experimental method offers a valuable means for determining the full-scale response of structures subjected to blast loads in aggressive environments. Further improvements to the experimental procedure are outlined, along with applications where the DTPs are particularly suited.
