Abstract:Observation and measurements of ice structure and deformation made in tunnels excavated into the margin of Taylor Glacier, a polythermal glacier in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, reveal a complex, rapidly deforming basal ice sequence. Displacement measurements in the basal ice, which is at a temperature of −18°C, together with the occurrence of cavities and slickenslides, suggest that sliding or rapid deformation in thin zones of high shear occurs at structural discontinuities within the basal zone. scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
