“…In (a), the hatched area is the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau; the thick dotted line indicates the northwestern limit of the East Asian summer monsoon; the dashed arrows indicate routes of the summer monsoon and transport of moisture during the summer season; the grey circular area with a letter "H" represents the Mongolian high pressure formed during the winter season; the thick grey arrows indicate routes of winter monsoon and dust transportation. In (b), the filled ellipses indicate the layers of 230 Th dates (Zhou et al, 2009) which are listed to the right; the void triangles indicate the loci of sub-samples previously used for REY analyses (Zhou et al, 2008b) and the void circles indicate the loci of sub-samples used in this study; the dashed line indicates the growth hiatus at depth of 84 mm. In (c), the four caves distribute along the Nuoshui River.…”

“…It grew from $38 to $10 ka and consists of dense clear calcite (40-84 mm in depth) and slightly opaque grayish calcite (the rest of SJ3). A growth hiatus is apparent on the lengthwise cut surface at a depth of $84 mm from its top (Zhou et al, 2009), corresponding to a growth cessation between $35 and 20 ka. Thus, SJ3 formed during part of marine isotope stage (MIS) 3 (38-35 ka), the last glacial maximum (LGM) (20-17.6 ka), the period synchronous with the Heinrich Event one (H1) (17.6-14.6 ka), and the last deglacial period (LDG) (14.6-10 ka).…”

“…Li et al [3] studied the 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios in a stalagmite from Heshang Cave in southern Shanxi Province by the mass-balance model, and successfully reconstructed the degree and variation in chemical weathering intensity for the soil overlying the cave. Moreover, Zhou et al [4] found that the 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios of a stalagmite could be used to investigate the atmospheric dust activity and the Asian winter monsoon at the Songjia Cave in northeastern Sichuan Province, China. These results imply that the fluctuation of 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios in speleothems could be closely related with changes in climate and environment.…”
