Degradation and mineralization of antipyrine by UV-A LED photo-Fenton reaction intensified by ferrioxalate with addition of persulfate

Abstract: The intensification of the degradation of antipyrine in aqueous solution by using a UV-A-LED-photo-Fenton reaction intensified by ferrioxalate complexes and with addition of persulfate anions was studied. The efficiency of the reaction was evaluated in terms of antipyrine degradation and mineralization degree at different initial concentrations of hydrogen peroxide, ferrous ion, oxalic acid and persulfate anion. The reaction was carried out using a lab-scale photoreactor irradiated with artificial UV-A-LED lig… Show more

“…The energy efficiency, extended lifetime and less toxic nature (i.e. mercury and lead-free) of LEDs can lower the cost and improve process sustainability 17,18 while their small footprint, directional light output and narrow band emission spectra allow for flexible design and development of compact water treatment units. 19 UV-LEDs were first employed by Chen et al for the photocatalytic treatment of perchloroethylene 20 and since then LED-photocatalysis has been proved feasible for the treatment of a wide range of contaminants.…”

“…Previous reports [25,26] show that the degradation efficiency of ATP by traditional sewage treatment is relatively low (about 30%). However, ATP degradation based on photodegradation has a good effect [27,28]. The detection rate of lipid-lowering drugs (BZB) was high (83.7%, Table S7), while the detection rates of CA and 4-CBA were only 38.1 and 32.6%, respectively.…”

“…They aim to mineralize organic contaminants into carbon dioxide CO 2 , water H 2 O and inorganic ions. They are based on the same basic principle which is: to generate highly oxidizing radical species to degrade organic pollutants, [16][17][18] they are characterized by the production of HO * [19] radicals, which have a very high oxidizing power (E°= 2.8 V). These radical entities can be generated in an aqueous medium either by coupling oxidants with ultraviolet light (O 3 /UV, H 2 O 2 /UV) or by photo catalysis (UV/TiO 2 , UV/ Fe II ) [20] or by ultrasound.…”
