Degradation failure features of chromium-plated gun barrels with a laser-discrete-quenched substrate

Abstract: The effect of substrate laser-discrete quenching on the degradation failure of chromium-plated gun barrels was metallurgically investigated. The results show that substrate laser-discrete quenching changes the failure patterns of chromium coatings during firing, and some periodic through-thickness cracks in the fired chromium coatings are justly located at original substrate zones between two adjacent laser-quenched tracks. Moreover, chromium coatings and the laser-quenched zones on the substrate are simultane… Show more

“…In addition, the coated tubular components are often used at HT and the coatings are required to be on the inside or outside surface of the tubes. For instance, the thermal sprayed coatings are on the out wall of boiler tubes [24,25], and some HT coatings are on the inner surface of the nozzle wall, gun barrel, and engine cylinder liners [26][27][28][29][30]. Also the enamel coatings are applied on both inside and outside surfaces of the combustor liners [31].…”

“…The cannon barrel is the most important part of the artillery system, its comprehensive mechanical properties have a key in uence on the range, hit accuracy, ring speed, and service life of artillery systems [2] . Because of the high-load working environment, it is necessary to improve the hardness and wear resistance of the 32CrNi3MoVE steel to ensure the stability of the artillery system during the entire service period [3] . Surface strengthening technology can improve the surface material properties while retaining the good toughness and ductility of the internal material [4,5] .…”

“…It is caused by the passage of some gunpowder gases before the bullet due to the increased diameter of the barrel, resulting from degradation of the barrel duct due to the effects of hot powder gases [1][2][3]. The traditional and most commonly used method of protecting the barrel against wear is to apply a galvanic chromium layer in the cable to ensure high hardness, abrasion, and corrosion resistance [4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. For technological reasons, the thickness of this layer does not exceed 0.1 mm.…”
