Degradation of diethanolamine by Fenton's reagent combined with biological post-treatment

Abstract: Abstract:Effectiveness of the Fenton's reagent for partial degradation of diethanolamine (DEA) prior to biological treatment is investigated. The effects of the major process parameters on the time evolution of COD, an indicator of the extent of degradation, were measured. The DEA concentration ranged from 800 to 16,000 ppm, in consideration of the COD of real effluents of natural gas processing plants. The initial reaction rate was a strong function of the feed amine concentration. About 70-80% of the ulti… Show more

“…Most AOPs are based on the generation of HO Å radicals in the medium, which follow from traditional methods to newly scrutinized biological modus operandi HO Å (E 0 = 2.720 V vs. NHE) [6][7][8][9][10]. Key AOPs include heterogeneous and homogeneous photocatalysis based on near ultraviolet (UV) or solar visible irradiation, electrolysis, ozonation, the Fenton's reagent, ultrasound, and wet air oxidation, while less conventional but evolving processes include ionizing radiation, microwaves, pulsed plasma, and the ferrate reagent [11][12][13][14][15]. AOPs although making use of different reacting systems, are all characterized by the same chemical feature: production of OH radicals.…”

“…The most techniques used in the AOP's are Fenton's reagent, UV/Ozone and UV/H 2 O 2 . As reported by Harimurti et al, Dutta et al, and Omar et al, Fenton's reagent has been used for treatment of wastewater contains alkanolamine (MEA, DEA and DIPA, respectively) [2][3][4]. However, some problems such as forming sludge during treatment and only applicable in the particular pH i.e.…”

“…The Fenton' reagent in the AOPs was used to degrade MEA [10], DEA [11], N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine [12] and DIPA [13]. Also, the use of UV/H 2 O 2 in the AOPs for degradation of MEA and MDEA [4,14] and ozonation for degradation of DEA [15] have been studied.…”
