Degradation of Doxycycline, Enrofloxacin, and Sulfamethoxypyridazine under Simulated Sunlight at Different pH Values and Chemical Environments

Abstract: In this work, the dissipation of the antibiotics doxycycline (DC) (from the group of tetracyclines), enrofloxacin (ENR) (a fluoroquinolone), and sulfamethoxypyridazine (SMP) (a sulfonamide) is investigated both under simulated sunlight and in the dark, at three different pH (4.0, 5.5, and 7.2), and in the presence of different salts and humic acids. The results indicate that all three antibiotics are very sensitive to photodegradation, and this sensitivity increased with rising pH values, from 4.0 to 7.2. The … Show more

“…Specifically, the zwitterion and negatively charged forms grow as the pH increases (Figure 2), which is determined by their pK a values. The effect of increasing photo-degradation with rising pH has also been highlighted for other antibiotics, such as tetracyclines (Conde-Cid et al, 2018a), sulfonamides (Canonica et al, 2008;Conde-Cid et al, 2018b) and other families of antibiotics (Canonica et al, 2008;Rodríguez-López et al, 2021;Álvarez-Esmorís et al, 2022).…”

“…Adding to that the DOX state in acidic pH results in the existence of 45(%) of zwitterionic DOX 0 and 55(%) of cationic DOX + as shown in Figure 6. Thus, DOX is easily excited electronically by the illumination source [48]. Figure 6.…”

“…The DOX concentration declined from 0.06 mM to 0.0066 mM at 350 nm with a DOX removal of 88.44%, which is in agreement with the results of previous studies on Figure 6. DOX speciation at different pH [48].…”
