Degradation of polyethylene by Penicillium simplicissimum isolated from local dumpsite of Shivamogga district

Abstract: Penicillium simplicissimum was isolated from a local dumpsite of Shivamogga district for use in the biodegradation of polyethylene. Degradation was carried out using autoclaved, UV-treated and surface-sterilized polyethylene. Degradation was monitored by observing weight loss and changes in physical structure by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. P. simplicissimum was able to degrade treated polyethylene (38 %) more efficiently tha… Show more

“…In regards to MnP and LiP enzyme, no reports describe their mechanisms in LDPE biodeterioration [ 18 ]. Therefore, we assume this process might occur in a similar manner as for lignin biotransformation, where these enzymes employ H 2 O 2 to catalyze phenolic fraction oxidation, non-phenolic and aromatic rings respectively [ 74 ].…”

“…These insoluble recalcitrant polymers take many years to be naturally degraded in the environment. This problem encourages plastic waste pollution that threatens many living things, including humans (10).…”

“…Those released gases cause lung diseases and cancer (11). As plastics waste is a pollutant polluting the land, air, and water ecosystem (12), threatening various living things (10), therefore the appropriate processing method of plastic waste is necessarily needed to be carried out. The application of reuse, reduce, and recycle is now widely applied to prevent the problem caused by plastics waste.…”
