Degradation of propyl paraben by activated persulfate using iron-containing magnetic carbon xerogels: investigation of water matrix and process synergy effects

Abstract: An advanced oxidation process comprising an iron-containing magnetic carbon xerogel (CX/Fe) and persulfate was tested for the degradation of propyl paraben (PP), a contaminant of emerging concern, in various water matrices. Moreover, the effect of 20 kHz ultrasound or light irradiation on process performance was evaluated. The pseudo-first order degradation rate of PP was found to increase with increasing SPS concentration (25-500 mg/L) and decreasing PP concentration (1690-420 μg/L) and solution pH (9-3). Fur… Show more

“…Furthermore, carbonate radicals are more selective for electron-rich compounds than hydroxyl radicals [45]. The results of Figure 10b are consistent with those shown in Figure 9 concerning SMX degradation in bottled water, where bicarbonates are the dominant ions at 210 mg/L concentration [46]. It seems that other than bicarbonate ions (e.g.…”

“…In recent years, in an attempt to increase the efficiency of sewage treatment technologies, the simultaneous use of more than one process has been constantly gaining ground. One way to quantify the interaction between two different processes (Process 1 and Process 2) is the degree of Synergy (S), defined as [ 27 ]: where k Process1/Process2 is the observed kinetic constant from the simultaneous implementation of the two processes …”

“…TiO2 combinations with noble metals (e.g., silver, gold and platinum) [63] or with carbon-based materials such as graphene-based materials [132,133], have also been examined. Other carbon materials have been widely studied, including activated carbons [134,135], carbon xerogels [136], carbon nanotubes [137,138], graphite [139], and more recently graphitic carbon nitride [140]. The suppression of the recombination of photo-generated charge carriers has been attempted, by adding oxidizing agents/electron acceptors (e.g., inorganic peroxides (S2O8 2− ), Fe 3+ , H2O2), doping the material with metal ions or anions, by noble metal loading, dye sensitization or using composite semiconductors [126,141,142].…”
