Deixis and reference are parts of pragmatics. These issues are needed to be known by the readers. Deixis and reference were existing in written or spoken language and those materials are learnt by students in university level especially in English education department. These things are essential to be known by the readers or audience. Thus, the aims of the study were to analyse the deixis and reference types in Jakarta Post. The research methodology was a qualitative research with content analysis. The instruments were checklist and document. Those were validated by triangulation. There were 90 articles of Jakarta Post to be analysed by using a thematic analysis. The steps were familiarization, coding, generating themes, defining and naming themes and writing up stage. The results showed that all types of dexis were found in Jakarta Post namely person, Spatial, time, discourse and social. In detail, 300 words of person deixis, 140 Spatial deixis, 90 time deixis, 30 social and 15 discouse deixis. The dominant type was person deixis. Another result was reference. The anaphoric and cataphoric reference were found in Jakarta Post, where the dominant one is anaphoric reference. In short, most of authors in Jakarta Post used person deixis and anaphoric reference to give clear information about the written text.

This study aimed to investigate the deixis types used in BTS’ English song lyrics and find out the dominant type which was frequently used. Song lyrics were chosen as the focus of this study since they involved the singers’ feelings and emotions presented by some expressions related to human thoughts, ideas, and opinions. The theories from Levinson (1983) and Yule (1996) and were used to analyze the data. Descriptive qualitative in the form of document analysis was implemented in this study. The results found that there are five types of deixis found in the BTS’ song lyrics, namely 54.96% of person, 7.25% of place, 12.21% of time, 19.84% of discourse, and 5.72% of social deixis. Person deixis is mostly used in the song lyrics since it maintains the relationship or interaction between the singers and their audience or fans. Hopefully, this research can help the audience to solve their problems in understanding the types of deixis.

Abstrak -Deictic expression is a noticeable item in linguistic studies to recognize the meaning of a specific context. Thus, pragmatic analysis in this research is to find five kinds of deixis those are: personal deixis (first, second, and third person deixis), place deixis, time deixis, social deixis and discourse deixis. The theory that is used in this research is the theory of deixis by Levinson (1983). The present study investigates the use of Deictic expression in five children picture storybook. The titles of each book are Reba wants ice cream, Gappu can't dance, Bunty and Bubbly, A new pet in the family, and under my bed. This study employed descriptive qualitative research design. On the types of deixis found in the children story books, the finding shows that in all the data, personal deixis is the most identifiable type of deixis. Some pattern of the deixis types in children storybooks cover the word; I, now, there, this, and mother which were found in the sentences of the story.
