Delay discounting, probability discounting, and interdental cleaning frequency

Abstract: Background Interdental cleaning is recommended by dentists but many people do not floss regularly. The health benefits of interdental cleaning are delayed, and sensitivity to delay is an important factor in many health behaviors. Thus, the present studies explore the relationship between frequency of flossing, and sensitivity to delayed and probabilistic outcomes. Method Crowd-sourced subjects were recruited in two studies (n = 584 and n = 321, re… Show more

“…Typically, individuals will discount (i.e., devalue) delayed or probabilistic outcomes (McKerchar & Renda, 2012). Delay discounting has been notably associated with various health‐related behaviors (DeFulio & Rzeszutek, 2022; Story et al, 2014) and is a measure of preference for a smaller sooner outcome over a larger later one (hereafter referred to as impulsive choice). Probability discounting has been associated with problematic gambling (Kyonka & Schutte, 2018) and is a measure of preference for a larger uncertain outcome over a smaller certain one (hereafter referred to as risky choice).…”
