“…The amplitude of the MMN has been found to be lower in alcoholics than in non-alcoholic controls [140]. The component has been proposed as an index of the brain inhibitory deficit associated with alcoholism [78,178]. Thus, as indexed by MMN and P300, alcoholics seem to exhibit impairments in early and in late cortical informationprocessing.…”

“…Decreased inhibition is thought to be reflected by larger MMN amplitudes (Zhang et al, 2001). Larger MMN amplitudes have been reported in studies of recently detoxified alcoholics (Kathmann et al, 1995) and in alcohol high-risk samples (Zhang et al, 2001). If increased MMN amplitude is associated with the vulnerability to alcoholism, it should be present in abstinent alcoholics and it should covary with factors known to predispose to alcoholism, such as a positive family history of alcoholism, conduct disorder and antisocial personality symptoms, or disinhibited personality traits (Finn et al, 2002).…”

“…There has been some excitement about the use of the mismatch negativity (MMN) event-related brain potential as a measure of the brain inhibitory deficit associated with alcoholism or the vulnerability to alcoholism (Kathmann et al, 1995;Zhang et al, 2001). Decreased inhibition is thought to be reflected by larger MMN amplitudes (Zhang et al, 2001).…”

“…The MMN can be elicited by any occasional discriminable change in a sound sequence, irrespective of the direction of the subject's attention [18]; this process is therefore thought to be automatic and preattentive [19,20,21]. A reduction in MMN amplitude [22,23,24] and a prolongation of its peak latency [25] have been shown in patients with schizophrenia. Although several studies have revealed the areas in the gray matter that generate the MMN, predominantly in the temporal auditory cortex and frontal cortex [19,20], the relationship between the white matter and MMN has not been investigated.…”
