Deliberate self harm and the Probation Service; an overlooked public health problem?

Abstract: Reducing the suicide rate is one of chief targets of Health of the nation, although consideration scepticism has been expressed about whether or not this can be achieved. We have reported that nearly a third of those supervised by the West Yorkshire Probation Service had a history of deliberate self harm (DSH). Comparing the known risk factors for DSH and suicide with the composition of those supervised by the Probation Service suggests this is a high-risk group that has not traditionally been well served by m… Show more

“…Although the vast majority of offenders are served in the community (5 million of the 7.2 million) (Glaze, Bonczar, & Zhang, 2010), most studies focus on self-injurious behavior, with and without suicidal intent, during incarceration. Few studies examine these behaviors in the context of community supervision of offenders (Wessely, Akhurst, Brown, & Moss, 1996) despite the previous finding that community offenders were at greater risk to die than prisoners (Pratt, Piper, Webb, & Shaw, 2006;Sattar, 2003). dependence, impulsive aggressive personality style, significant social and occupational losses, social isolation, hopelessness, physical illness, family history of suicide, and exposure to suicide in the community (Baillargeon et al, 2009;Fagan, Cox, Helfand, & Aufderheide, 2010;Miles, 1977;Sattar, 2003;Wortzel et al 2009).…”

“…It is known that people supervised by the Probation Service, who have high rates of mental illness (NAPO/Harry Fletcher, 2003) and selfharm (Akhurst et al, 1995), have not been well served by mental health services (Wessely et al, 1996;Keene et al, 2003). Although those attending courts have high rates of mental illness, neither initial detection of disorder nor subsequent holistic or fl exible service provision is adequate (Shaw et al, 1999;Green et al, 2005).…”
