Inch, Rowlands and Soliman () found in their study of young male offenders that ‘the common thread linking almost all the acts of self‐harm … was a desperate desire to escape from a situation which had become intolerable and which had overwhelmed the coping mechanisms of the individual concerned’ (p.168).
