Delimiting central business districts — A physical approach using remote sensing

Abstract: Central Business Districts (CBDs) are an apparent structural type of large cities. Although the conceptual definition of CBDs is mostly functional, this urban structure type has characteristic physical features. The paper presents a conceptual framework to map these CBDs using physical parameters. We identify physical parameters from the published literature and statistically designate the CBD from a 3-D city model by the example of the test site La Defense, Paris, France. From it, we develop a method to detec… Show more

“…Clear spatial delineation is a prerequisite for submarket analysis. Taubenböck et al (2013) suggest using a qualitative assessment of the main concentration of commercial activities, measured relatively to its surrounding areas. Fuerst andMcAllister (2011a, 2011b) note that these submarkets should contain enough observations for statistical relevance.…”

“…In general, metropolitan area is divided into CBD (Central Business District) zone and outskirts zone. The CBD is a specialized zone in urban area, plays role as the center of urban population activities in the field of economic, capital, business, and financial (Taubenbock et al, 2013). CBD becomes attractive due to its availability and accessibility to jobs, transportation points, as well as markets.…”

“…For many decades, the approach of Murphy and Vance (1954) dominated economic geography. After nearly 60 years, it was modified by Taubenböck et al (2013), who use detailed data on the intensity of the land use taken from both open sources and satellite pictures, then applying morphological 3D modelling of the land use at the level of blocks with the object of delimiting the CBD of Paris. This method, with its objectivity and flexibility, is very data demanding and computation intensive.…”
