Delirium in hemodialysis predicts mortality: a single-center, long-term observational study

Abstract: ObjectivesDelirium signifies underlying brain dysfunction; however, its clinical significance in hemodialysis remains unclear. In this study, we sought to determine whether the occurrence of delirium during hemodialysis was associated with higher mortality.Patients and methodsThis was a retrospective, 10-year cohort study. This study was performed at the urology department located within a hospital in Oyokyo, Hirosaki. We analyzed 338 of 751 patients who underwent hemodialysis. Psychiatrists diagnosed patients… Show more

“…Fentanyl has the advantage that it has no active metabolites with minimal renal excretion. Haloperidol is recommended for restlessness or agitation due to its safety profile and parenteral route of administration [76]. Nausea can be treated with antipsychotics such as olanzapine or haloperidol [61].…”

“…Haloperidol has a better safety profile and can be administered parenterally. [ 25 ] In patients with refractory symptoms an attempt is made to lower the consciousness intentionally using a titrated and monitored dose of nonopioid drugs to relieve distress of symptoms. It is known as palliative sedation and commonly drugs like midazolam and phenobarbitone are used.…”

“…The mortality rate in adults with CKD is approximately 10% to 15% worldwide, and it is 2- to 4-fold higher than the rate in those without CKD. [ 3 ] In a recent study by Lo et al, end-stage renal failure requiring dialysis was an independent risk factor for 1-year mortality after hip fracture surgery. [ 4 ] Indeed, osteoporotic hip fractures related to CKD were associated with high mortality and morbidity, with rates up to 30% in elderly patients, [ 5 8 ] while mineral and bone disorders were associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular and valvular calcification, arterial stiffness, hypertension, and sudden death.…”
