Delivering High-Quality Family Planning Services in Crisis-Affected Settings I: Program Implementation

Abstract: Extending access to a wide variety of contraceptive methods, including long-acting reversible methods, is feasible in crisis-affected countries by focusing on best practices such as competency-based training, supply chain support, systematic supervision, and community mobilization. “…The CARE Supporting Access to Family Planning and Post‐Abortion Care (SAFPAC) program in eastern DRC, which supported 19 facilities, was able to serve more than 36 000 new users of modern contraceptive methods over 4 years . Critical elements for long‐term success included needs assessments, competency‐based training, management of the supply chain, and support and mobilization of the community . In long‐standing conflicts, which are often accompanied by protracted displacements, reproductive health services are equally critical, but changes in funding focus and availability can have a considerable impact on access and uptake …”

“…These methods are suitable for a range of women's pregnancy intentions and promote consistent use of family planning. However, they are the least available and used methods in many developing countries and crisis‐affected settings . The barriers to availability and use of LARC include women's limited decision‐making power, the cost of implementing service delivery, persistent societal level myths about LARC, and misperceptions about these methods among women, men, families, and providers .…”
