For many years, the most popular technique for Internet video streaming is hypertext transfer protocol-based adaptive streaming, known as HAS (HTTP Adaptive Streaming). However, a seamless viewing experience can not be just simply guaranteed by HAS only. In the management network, the adaptation of HAS copes with a huge challenge since clientdriven schemes lead to unfair share of available bandwidth when multiple players request adaptive bitrates (i.e bandwidth) through a bottleneck network link. Each client's requesting to maximize its needed bandwidth leads to the competition of network resources. This causes great QoE (Quality of Experience) reduction in terms of main metrics for each player: fairness, efficiency, and stability. In this paper, we propose an integration scheme of bitrate adaptation and Software Defined Networking-based resource allocation that can improve the QoE of competing clients. Our experiments show that the proposed scheme increases at least 20% up to 124% in terms of QoE scores compared with some existing methods as well as gains smoother viewing experience than the solutions of the traditional Internet.

Adaptive video streaming techniques were introduced to enable high quality video delivery over HTTP. These schemes propose to choose dynamically the appropriate video rate to match the operating conditions. In home networks, wireless access is the predominant Internet access. Multiple clients/players with different link qualities compete over a limited wireless bandwidth to transfer their video streams. As a result, some users undergo unpredictable degradations of their Quality of Experience (QoE) while others benefit from these perturbations. In this paper we introduce a new technique to address this issue at the gateway without modifying neither the client nor the video server side. We design a framework WNAVS (Wireless Network Assisted Video Streaming) that relies on the deployment of Software Defined Networking (SDN). WNAVS performs a dynamic traffic shaping based on collected network traffic statistics and allocates bandwidth for the clients in real time. We evaluate WNAVS over several metrics: fairness, instability, average video quality as well as the video traffic utilization. Our results demonstrate an improvement for all these parameters.

Access to the full text of the published version may require a subscription. Abstract-HTTP Adaptive video Streaming (HAS) is the dominant traffic type on the Internet. When multiple video clients share a bottleneck link many problems arise, notably bandwidth underutilisation, unfairness and instability. Key findings from previous papers show that the "ON-OFF" behaviour of adaptive video clients is the main culprit. In this paper we focus on the network, and specifically the effects of network queue size when multiple video clients share network resources. We conducted experiments using the Mininet virtual network environment streaming real video content to open-source GPAC video clients. We explored how different network buffer sizes, ranging from 1xBDP to 30xBDP (bandwidth-delay-product), affect clients sharing a bottleneck link. Within GPAC, we implemented the published state-of-the-art adaptive video algorithms FESTIVE and BBA-2. We also evaluated impact of web cross-traffic. RightsOur main findings indicate that the "rule-of-thumb" 1xBDP for network buffer sizing causes bandwidth underutilisation, limiting available bandwidth to 70% for all video clients across different round-trip-times (RTT). Interaction between web and HAS clients depends on multiple factors, including adaptation algorithm, bitrate distribution and offered web traffic load. Additionally, operating in an environment with heterogeneous RTTs causes unfairness among competing HAS clients.Based on our experimental results, we propose 2xBDP as a default network queue size in environments when multiple users share network resources with homogeneous RTTs. With heterogeneous RTTs, a BDP value based on the average RTTs for all clients improves fairness among competing clients by 60%.
