Delivery of dual miRNA through CD44-targeted mesoporous silica nanoparticles for enhanced and effective triple-negative breast cancer therapy

Abstract: Cationic Mesoporous silica Nanoparticle coated with hyaluronic acid conjugated polymer (HA-Dual miRNA Np) facilitated enhanced dual miRNA loading, efficient delivery and significantly inhibited tumor growth as well as retarded metastasis in triple-negative breast cancer.

“…Based on these discovered molecular mechanisms, some progress has been made in breast cancer treatment. Delivering dual microRNA using CD44-targeted mesoporous silica nanoparticles proved to be effective in TNBC treatment [ 26 ]. Although many studies provided in vitro and in vivo a detailed molecular picture of TNBC cancers [ 27 29 ], the underlying cause of breast cancer has not been fully understood.…”

“…MSNs have also shown promising efficacy in photodynamic therapy, an alternative to radio-and chemotherapies [107,108]. In this approach, the photosensitizers are incorporated into MSNs, while functionalizing them with specific ligands to target cancer cells [97,105,109].…”

“…Similar approaches have been developed for other cancer types, such as triple negative breast cancer (TNBC), where miR-34a is down-regulated and miR-10b is up-regulated. By co-delivering miR-34a-mimic and antisense-miR-10b in MSNs, Ahir et al achieved the efficient inhibition of tumor growth and the retardation of metastasis in an in vivo model of TNBC [ 104 ].…”
