Deltoido-pectoralis approach to axillary vessels for full-flow cardiopulmonary bypass

Abstract: Axillary artery has been proposed as a safe and effective alternative for arterial cannulation in surgical procedures involving ascending aorta and/or aortic arch, and is nowadays the site of choice in many centres. Advantages of axillary artery cannulation include antegrade flow and the possibility of selective mono-hemispherical brain perfusion during circulatory arrest. Experiences with the axillary vein cannulation, however, are scarce. Here we report our preliminary experience with axillo-axillary cardiop… Show more

“…Full‐flow CPB was achieved with vacuum assistance, and adequate decompression of the heart was obtained without left heart venting. Exposure of the axillary vein is relatively easy and both axillary artery and vein cannulation could be performed through a small single skin incision using the deltoid‐pectoralis approach …”

“…Both the axillary artery and vein were exposed using the deltoid-pectoralis approach. 3 Through a 6-cm long right subclavicular skin incision, the muscle fibers of the pectoralis major and the clavi-pectoral fascia were gently dissected. The axillary artery and vein were identified at the deltoid-pectoral groove.…”
