Purpose This paper aims to examine the effect of inventory information sharing on inventory efficiency and its intervening effect of information technology (IT) capability in manufacturing firms. Design/methodology/approach Stratified random sampling and filter questions selected targeted respondents, and an online survey collected 124 completed questionnaires from Malaysian manufacturing firms. partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) examined the structural model and hypothesis statement. An analysis of importance-performance map analysis (IPMA) test identified the relative importance drivers of inventory efficiency. Findings The findings showed that enhanced IT capabilities in manufacturing firms mediate a positive relationship between inventory sharing and inventory efficiency. Research limitations/implications This study portrays the relationship between inventory level, demand and information sharing. The research was carried out only within Malaysian manufacturing firms. Practical implications These findings will enable the management of manufacturing firms to design and visualise their inventory levels and share best practices across supply chain networks to achieve effective and optimised inventory planning. Social implications This study illustrates an intervention model that offers a direct and indirect impact of IT capabilities that allow scholars to close inventories productivity gaps in research. Originality/value This paper extends the limited literature on the sharing of inventory information and inventory productivity, notably from a strategic management perspective. The findings help scholars clearly understand the information systems capability and its mediating impact on information sharing and inventory efficiency’s relationship in the manufacturing sector. Moreover, demand information sharing affected the dynamic supply chain.

Sustainability is one of the most important topics that should be considered by every sector because it helps to reduce the harmful environmental effects of operations. Supply chain operations have significant impacts on environmental, social and economic issues, and therefore, sustainable supply chains have become an important issue for the companies. Also, Physical Internet (PI) is one of the recent research topics in supply chain literature and it helps to provide sustainability. The contribution of this study to the literature is the comparison of traditional supply chain and PI structures with simulation in terms of sustainability. The simulation models are tested on realistic but hypothetical case studies. Each simulation model consists of three echelons (supplier, distribution center and retailer) and is developed by using ARENA 14.0 software. The PI and the traditional are compared according to carbon emissions, and the results are discussed in detail. The results show that the emission level of PI is significantly lower than the emission level of traditional supply chain structures. Also, larger vehicle capacity reduces the total carbon emissions in both traditional supply chains and PI due to the reduced number of trips.

The COVID-19 pandemic has continued to result in severe disruptions to food supply chains. In this research, we present a simulation study on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on food supply chains and their sustainability using the lobster industry in Nova Scotia, Canada, as an example. The main contributions of this paper are twofold. First, it analyzes how the pandemic has negatively disrupted lobster supply chains and their sustainability. Second, it demonstrates how a simulation-based methodology based on the software AnyLogistix can be applied to examine the effects of a pandemic on food supply chains. We show the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic from four perspectives: production-inventory dynamics, customer performance, financial performance, and lead-time performance. Our findings include the following. First, the pandemic has created a backlog problem for the live lobster industry. Second, it has significantly increased the lead time of the lobster supply chain. Overall, this research can help the government and trade organizations to devise appropriate policies to reduce the negative impacts of the pandemic on food supply chains and their sustainability.
