Demand side management using profile steering

Abstract: Many Demand Side Management (DSM) approaches use energy prices as steering signals. This paper shows that such steering signals may result in power quality problems and high losses. As an alternative, this paper proposes to use desired (e.g., flat) power profiles as steering signals and presents an efficient scheduling algorithm that can follow desired power profiles. This paper investigates the complexity of price and profile steering, and presents an algorithm for profile steering. The evaluation of this algo… Show more

“…Demand-side management (e.g., [2], [3]) and demand-response programs [4] provide incentives to domestic customers to adapt their behavior, or directly control their appliances. Commonly in these programs, customers have so-called smart appliances that can be steered within such a framework.…”

“…As discussed in Section 2.2 this load is separately connected to the network from the stadium's load, thus it does not contribute to the costs incurred by the ArenA from its CTA. However, with a significant penetration of EVs, grid congestions can be expected, which smart charging strategies can help to prevent [12,14,21].…”

“…This is improved by differentiated dynamic pricing [6]. A new control concept called profile steering was recently introduced in [7]. The work in [8] applies this concept for controlling a group of EV chargers, while [9] applies this concept to islanded operation of an electricity network, demonstrating positive effects on power quality within the entire network.…”
