What explains cross-national variation in support for religious politics? More precisely, why do even observant believers show uneven demand for clerical control of politics? In contrast to theoretical alternatives, I argue that demand for clerical control of politics is a sign of relative weakness tied to low popular religious participation, which alters the risks and benefits of clerical political involvement. Two social mechanisms explain this relationship in contexts of active religious participation: strong networks between religious and state elites, and high levels of political diversity within religious communities. World Values Survey data provide statistical evidence that (a) support for clerical involvement in politics among regular participators is highest and (b) gaps between high and low religious participation citizens are largest where aggregate participation is lowest. Qualitative evidence regarding the theory’s mechanisms draws on field interviews in the Philippines during recent church–state tension.

En este artículo se analiza el deterioro electoral del Partido Demócrata Cristiano (pdc) chileno, que cayó del 26% de los votos en las elecciones inaugurales de la democracia en 1989, al 4.2% en las legislativas de 2021. Sugerimos tres factores explicativos. Primero, que si bien la base electoral del pdc siempre fue predominantemente católica, desde mediados de la primera década de los dos mil, los partidos de derecha han competido con dicho partido y con éxito parcial en este núcleo de electores. Segundo, que dicho partido ha sido históricamente de centro, pero desde fines de los noventa ha enfrentado la competencia de los partidos de izquierda por estos votantes. Tercero, que las facciones internas del pdc pasaron de una dinámica cooperativa a una disruptiva, con acelerados cambios de directivas y fuga de militantes. Malos resultados para las elecciones presidenciales de 2017 y 2021, con un 5.9% y un 11.6%, respectivamente.

Empirical research on democratization is dominated by case studies and small-N comparisons. This article is a first attempt to take stock of qualitative case-based research on democratization. It finds that most articles use methods implicitly rather than explicitly and are disconnected from the burgeoning literature on case-based methodology. This makes it difficult to summarize the substantive findings or to evaluate the contributions of the various approaches to our knowledge of democratic transition and consolidation. There is much to gain from a closer collaboration between methods experts and empirical researchers of democratization.
