Demographic Characteristics, Health Conditions, and Residential Service Use in Adults with Down Syndrome in 25 U.S. States

Abstract: This study describes service users with Down syndrome (N = 1,199) and a comparative sample with intellectual and developmental disabilities but not Down syndrome (N = 11,182), drawn from National Core Indicator surveys of adult service users in 25 U.S. states. Individuals with Down syndrome were younger than were individuals without Down syndrome. Men with Down syndrome were older than women with Down syndrome, whereas the reverse was true of the individuals without Down syndrome. Most (68%) people with Down s… Show more

“…Compared to those with DD due to other etiologies, the odds for those with DS to present moderate intellectual disability were 3.957, p < .001, 95% CI [2.858, 5.478]. As reported in other studies (Stancliffe et al, 2012), a large majority (71.5%) of adults with Down syndrome were living in their parent's or other relative's home. The health survey was completed, in most cases (70%), by a parent of the adult with Down syndrome, and the adult with DS completed the survey independently in 6.5% (N = 19) of the cases.…”

“…The World Population Ageing 2013 report finds that there are 85 men to every 100 women 60 years of age or older, and 61 men per 100 women 80 years of age or older (United Nations, 2013). Stancliffe et al (2012) found a similar trend among adults with Down syndrome (i.e., men with Down syndrome have a shorter life expectancy than women with Down syndrome), but a different pattern among persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities without Down syndrome (i.e., women have a shorter life expectancy).…”

“…It includes the subdomains of safety, respect/rights, health, medications, wellness, and restraints. Indicators ranging from living arrangement, obesity, Health Surveillance in Older Adults The cross-sectional analysis by Stancliffe et al (2012) comparing health conditions among adults with Down syndrome (n ¼ 1199) versus adults with non-Down syndrome intellectual and developmental disabilities (n ¼ 11,182) is one example of use of the NCI for health research related to aging with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As stated earlier, these authors reported shorter life expectancy in males with Down syndrome compared to females with Down syndrome, but longer life expectancy in males versus females with intellectual and developmental disabilities without Down syndrome.…”
