Demographic expansions in South America: Enlightening a complex scenario with genetic and linguistic data

Abstract: Native Americans are characterized by specific and unique patterns of genetic and cultural/linguistic diversities, and this information has been used to understand patterns of geographic dispersion, and the relationship between these peoples. Particularly interesting are the Tupi and Je speaker dispersions. At present, a large number of individuals speak languages of these two stocks; for instance, Tupi-Guarani is one of the official languages in Paraguay, Bolivia, and the Mercosul economic block. Although the… Show more

“…Rapid genetic diversification has been an early hypothesis in genetic studies of South American populations (Neel 1973), and in more recent time may have been associated with the great linguistic diversity that is present today (Campbell 1997;Loukotka 1968;Ramallo et al 2013). The lack of substantial mitogenome data from Andean populations still leaves unresolved questions regarding any significant differentiation between east and west South America.…”

“…Cloning of pPCRs using L16070/H16259-L16234/H16422 and L16268/H16498 primers confirmed 100% and 99–100% of haplotype identification in SABMN00701 and SABMN704, respectively (S1 Fig). Haplogroup sequences for SABMN00701 and SABMN00704 revealed 100% and 99% identity, respectively, with haplogroup C1 from Native South Americans (KC676569 [49]; JQ996071 [50]; EU095227 [51]).…”
