“…The Mean Refractive power of the Intra ocular lens required for these cataract eyes was calculated to be 19.34 D ( With a 95% CI between 19.06 and 19.63 D). This is similar to a study from New Zealand that showed a mean IOL power in Asian eyes of 19.45D( 27). It was however smaller than the finding of the study in Pakistan (21.2 D ± 2.35 D)( 28) and Nepal (21.60D ± 1.74)(21).Since It has been a common trend in resource limited countries like ours ( where there is scarcity of A -Scan and Keratometer) to insert the estimated average power of IOL for every cataract eyes, we were interested to know the percentage of patients who could have been subjected to an over plus IOL had…”

“…This may be related to more advanced cataracts as evidenced by Yoon et al who reported that the axial length was difficult to measure in Maori and Pacific Island Nations because of advanced cataracts. 11 Indians also presented at a younger age than NZ Europeans/Europeans. These presentations may relate to the ethnic variation in risk factors such as diabetes and smoking in New Zealand 12 and highlight the need for early intervention in highly prevalent but modifiable risk factors for cataract.…”

“…Maori and Pacific Island Nations presented for surgery at an earlier age than NZ Europeans/Europeans, as reported previously but with poorer preoperative BMVA. This may be related to more advanced cataracts as evidenced by Yoon et al who reported that the axial length was difficult to measure in Maori and Pacific Island Nations because of advanced cataracts . Indians also presented at a younger age than NZ Europeans/Europeans.…”

“…The only disproportionately low risk factor for PCR‐VL in Maori patients was glaucoma. Interestingly, one other study has also reported low rates of glaucoma in Maori populations, although the reasons for this remain unclear …”
