Démographie du Puffin cendré Calonectris diomedea de Selvagem Grande (30°09’N, 15°52’W)

Abstract: The breeding numbers of the Cory's Shearwaters Calonectris diomedea of Selvagem Grande (30° 09' N, 15° 52' W) have shown important variations during the last three decades, decreasing from about 100,000 birds at the beginning of the seventies to 5,000 only in 1977 following depredations, and increasing regularly since then to reach nowadays about 30,000.

“…The energy cost of this behavior may be even higher since some males reach the end of the pre-laying period in poor body condition due to their constant nest defense. Confirming this, in Cory's shearwaters and Bulwer's petrels (Bulweria bulwerii), males with higher nest tenacity show worse body condition [16][17][18].…”

“…Because most immature birds were ringed as chicks, we could determine their ages from the date of ringing. In this species, sexual maturity is only acquired at an average of 9 years (Mougin et al 2000) and immature birds start visiting the colonies when they are 4 years old (Campioni et al 2016).…”

“…From these blood samples, all birds were sexed molecularly following Fridolfsson and Ellegren (1999), and based on the detection of a female-specific locus (CHD1-W; diagnostic kit from Durviz, Valencia, Spain). Finally, determining exact age of birds can only be assessed by ringing the individuals as chicks but this is often impractical in long-lived species with delayed recruitment (such as the Cory's shearwater; Mougin et al, 2000). Since all individuals of this study were ringed as adults, we cannot assess their exact age at the time of sampling, and we used therefore "years since first sampling" as a proxy for experience (Exp), assuming that each year that passes, whatever the age at the first year of sampling, an individual has gained experience (e.g., Nichols et al, 1997;Crespin et al, 2006).…”
