Demography of Psychiatric Patients with Borderline Personality Traits

Abstract: This study was designed to identify the intensity of borderline personality traits in a large sample of psychiatric inpatients (n = 4,800) and to determine the relationship between the borderline traits and a variety of demographic variables. Results indicated the intensity of borderline pathology increased in (1) students or the unemployed, (2) married and separated patients, (3) patients with a criminal record, (4) atheists, and (5) patients from a broken home. It lessened with increasing age of the patient.… Show more

“…Unfortunately, determining whether factors affecting the sex ratio in a sample (often multiple factors) are indeed independent of the disorder being studied is not always as clear as one might think. It would clearly be erroneous to make conclusions regarding the demographic characteristics of persons with borderline PD based on data obtained within a Veterans' Administration (VA) setting, such as the sample obtained by Snyder, Goodpaster, Pitts, and Pokorny (1985) within a VA hospital wherein 98% of 4,800 consecutive admissions were male. Although 93% of their borderline subjects were male, the procurement of male versus female subjects with borderline PD was in this case clearly determined by factors that were independent of the personality disorder (i.e., military service).…”

“…However, a great many more studies report less people and social supports in their social networks, less social network diversity and integration, or contact with fewer people compared to controls (Beeney et al, 2018; Lazarus et al, 2020; Liebke et al, 2017; Stepp et al, 2009; Vaglum & Vaglum, 1989; Zielinski & Veilleux, 2014). People with BPD are also more likely to live alone compared to those without psychopathology or low BPD features (Liebke et al, 2017; Vardy et al, 2019; but see Snyder et al, 1985 for conflicting findings). Overall, the findings generally suggest that individuals with BPD and high BPD features have smaller social networks and less social contact with those in their networks, although there some contradictory findings.…”

“…While some findings suggest that those with BPD are more likely to be single (Howard & Cheavens, 2023; Snyder et al, 1985; Whisman & Schonbrun, 2009), most research suggests that there is no significant difference between those with BPD and controls on relationship status, including divorce (Beeney et al, 2019; Javaras et al, 2017; Jeung et al, 2020; Lavner et al, 2015; Lazarus et al, 2020; Modestin & Villiger, 1989; Vaglum & Vaglum, 1989; Valentiner et al, 2014). Other studies also suggest that BPD is not associated with parenthood status (Javaras et al, 2017) or relationship length (Lazarus & Cheavens, 2017; Miano, Grosselli, et al, 2017).…”
